Educational Options Scenarios

These are all the possible options that I believe are available to children and teens in our area.  Please let me know if you think of other options!

1.  Attend Public School – regular class placement:

A) – with no differentiated education or accommodations

B) – with a 504 in place to give student accommodations

C) – with an IEP or 504 and do partial day or modified day schedule

D) – with concurrent enrollment in community school, or public school charter, alternative, or  homestudy program (or for older students, concurrent enrollment at Cabrillo)

E) – with an IEP and special education services such as speech, OT, or resource program

F) – with an IEP and one-on-one aide and/or perhaps additional special education services

2. Attend Public School – special day class:
(placed by district in district SDC or COE SDC)

A) – with accommodations and/or modifications and specialized instruction

B) – with a one-on-one aide and accommodations and/or modifications and specialized instruction

C) – with partial day or modified schedule and with accommodations, modifications, and special instruction

D) – placed in specialized SDC, in another district (Ex: special HOH program)

3. Attend District provided ‘home and hospital’
(in-home weekly tutoring, modified day and program)

4. Attend District Alternative Public School

A) – with no differentiated education or accommodations

B) – with 504 with accommodations and/or modifications

C) – with IEP services (such as speech, OT, RSP)

D) – with IEP services and one-on-one aide

5. Attend District Homestudy or Independent Study Program

A) – with no special services

B) – with 504 or IEP with accommodations, modifications, and/or special education services

C) -with IEP and one-on-one aide

6. Attend a different neighborhood school in your district through open-enrollment, with any IEP or other services as your current school (although may not be guaranteed transfer or same services)

7. Attend a school outside your district through an inter-district transfer, in a regular, charter, homestudy, or alternative program, with most likely no special education services.

8. Attend Private School (or Residential Home Placement: click here for more info)
(no special education services offered by School District unless mandated by court)

A) – of any type with no special services or accommodations

B) – which is geared toward a different learning style or educational model

C) – which instructs students with a particular disability (learning disability, dyslexia, or autism, etc.)  and where educational therapy is part of the program

D) – doesn’t offer differentiated teaching but parent pays for after-school educational therapy services

9.  Be part of an independent study, homestudy, or homeschool program

A) – with a public school program, with or without special education services (see above)

B) – with a local or state charter homestudy or online program (no special education services offered by your district but some charter programs offer special education services such as O.T., speech)

C) – pay for your child’s general education and special education services on your own (some may be paid by insurance) or access the many free learning activities in the community and online or in networked groups.)

10. Homeschool independently and create your own individualized educational plan:

Do it on your own or sign an affidavit (sometimes called an R4 affidavit) and “be your own private school”  (You must pay for any special education or other services yourself.  On rare occasions your public school may be required to place and pay for private school education.)  Your individualized program can include: private therapy, tutoring, homestudy, classes (community, recreation, art, and online) sports, real life learning experiences, networked playgroups and study groups, computer learning programs, manipulatives and educational program kits, library activities, volunteer work, apprenticeships, and more!

11. Unschool and help your child with what he/she wants to learn or allow them to do their own self-directed learning.

They can choose to spend their time doing what ever interests them: reading, watching videos, using the internet, volunteering, being mentored, learning from real-life experience, starting their own business, or whatever they choose to learn about in any manner they choose.  They can receive any accommodations they need and use any type of program or materials that suit their needs.  Parents generally must pay for any tutoring or therapy (insurance may pay for some) but they also can access many free learning activities online and in the community.

THE MAIN THING IS TO THINK ABOUT YOU, YOUR CHILD AND YOUR FAMILY’S NEEDS AND RESOURCES AND THEN CHOOSE WHAT WORKS BEST FOR ALL OF YOU!
